How much does it cost to manufacture a supplement?
There is no single price, and anyone who gives you one before knowing your product is guessing. The cost comes from a handful of decisions. Once you have made them, a manufacturer can give you a real quote.
Updated October 2026
What you pay the manufacturer for
- The ingredients, which are often the largest part of the cost.
- Making the product: blending, and filling capsules, pressing tablets or packing powder.
- The packaging: bottle, cap, seal and label, or sachets and their box.
- Testing each batch and keeping the production records.
What moves the price up or down
- The formula. More ingredients, larger amounts per serving and branded or certified ingredients all cost more.
- The format and the size: capsules, tablets and powders each have their own process, and a 120-count bottle costs more to fill than a 60-count one.
- The packaging. Standard bottles and labels cost less than custom ones.
- The size of the order. Each production run has fixed costs, so larger orders cost less per unit.
- A ready-made formula or your own. Private label avoids the cost of developing a new formula.
Costs outside the manufacturer's quote
- Designing your label and your brand.
- Shipping to your warehouse, or to your country.
- If you sell outside the United States: import duties and your country's registration or notification.
- Storage, order fulfillment and the marketing to sell your first batch.
Ask what the quote includes and what it leaves out, so the number you compare is the full one.
How to compare two quotes
Two quotes can only be compared when they describe the same product: the same ingredients in the same amounts, the same count per bottle and the same packaging. Then check what each one includes, such as testing, labels and shipping, and what the minimum order is. The lowest price per bottle is not the cheapest option if the minimum is twice as large. Our 10 questions to ask a manufacturer helps you ask both manufacturers the same things.
How to keep a first order manageable
- Start with one or two products.
- Consider a ready-made formula for your first launch.
- Use standard packaging, and put your investment into the label.
- Order close to the minimum, which usually starts at around 1,500 to 2,000 bottles, and plan your reorder early.
What a manufacturer needs to give you a real quote
- The formula, or a product you want to match: ingredients and amounts per serving.
- The format and the count per bottle.
- The packaging.
- The quantity, and where it ships.
